V. We interviewed individuals to see what their response would be to my plan. Their responses are as follows. Alex Noceda Mrs. Ramey Period 9 2/23/11 Government
We interviewed a couple of people and the majority of them are for the legalization of marijuana. The first person I interviewed was Mary McGinty. I started of by telling her that marijuana should be made legal and I stated that it could boost our economy and we could use the tax revenue to fund our educational systems or however the United States Government sees fit. A study by Jeffery Miron, a professor at Harvard, said that legalizing marijuana would save the government $7.7 billion a year and Miron estimated that if taxed like alcohol and tobacco it could generate $6.2 billion dollars a year. Another person we have interviewed is Gabriel Huerta, he believes that marijuana should be legal but should be regulated under strict conditions. He is very supportive of its use medicinally but believes that legalizing marijuana will not bring down crime. I strongly believe that if marijuana was legal the crime rate would reduce significantly because taking away the criminal element of using marijuana would be completely gone so that bring down the crime. Also you rarely see rational people fighting over cigarettes because you could always walk to the nearest gas station and buy as much as you want and I don’t think marijuana would be worth fighting for if it was treated the same. Criminals will steal anything worth money, so yes they could easily steal the marijuana but if regulated it would be a lot harder. We would all agree that banks are a safe way to keep your money but banks get robbed all the time yet no one disputes their safeness. When my colleague interviewed Mrs. K she was very against the idea of marijuana being legalized but after some information her mind opened but only slightly. She is against marijuana legalization because she said that marijuana messes up your future children’s chromosomes permanently. I have done extensive research and have read articles that say it can mess up your baby and that it won’t mess up your baby. I know that a lot of studies done with marijuana in the United States are extremely biased against marijuana. In the future I would like to see unbiased research done to educate the public on marijuana use before, during and after pregnancy. Another person we interviewed was Ms. Barry and she was totally opposed of the idea of legalizing marijuana for recreational use because it will cause people to be addicted because marijuana is highly addictive and the United States government will not be saving money because there will be more people in rehab for marijuana use. She also stated that a lot of people are in rehab for marijuana use. I told her that the reason a lot of people are in rehab because they are mandated by the court to go to rehab. They have the choice to go to rehab or jail and obviously the smarter choice is to go to rehab and then be put on probation.
